The bluebird carries the sky on his back. - Henry David Thoreau
Have your own style. This is the message I got from the reading of clothing in Walden. It seems like Thoreau was trying to imply that following the styles of your time is pointless because it changes so fast. You will be wasting your time if you try to stay caught up. Thoreau also stated that he thought that it was stupid that there is a style that people should try and follow. Thoreau felt that he should choose what he wears and not be judged for it. I agree with Thoreau because for me it makes no sense to try and copy others.
Being yourself is something you should be proud of. Being independent is a mark that you like who you are. This shows that you don't car about what other people think. I try to not be bothered if someone ever makes a bad remark about what I am wearing or my style. Luckily this does not happen much because it seems like the male gender has less problems with caring about clothing.
Shelter might be required to live, but how big of a shelter is required. From the chapter Shelter I took away some information on how we live today. Thoreau wrote about how he had seen people living comfortably in small huts and some people who lived in giant houses. I agree with Thoreau that living in an oversized house might be unnecessary but I disagree that having a tiny hut is enough. It is fully possible to live in a tiny hut but for how long? Can you live with four people in a room smaller then half of Mr. Sharon's room? Many would say yes but I say no. I might be spoiled, but I sure know that many people would not be able to stand living in a small one room hut with their family for their whole life. There would be no kitchen, bathroom, or sleeping space. The Human body needs to be able to relax. Sleeping on top of each other in freeing cold temperature during the winter is not something I could do.
Maybe you don't need a mansion but I do believe that having a house with at least more then one room is more suitable for a modern day family.
